The characteristic leaf damage caused by coconut rhinoceros beetles, Oryctes rhinoceros. Mamala Bay golf course, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. Palm fronds show triangular cutouts or slightly rounded cut-off tops, the result of adult beetles boring into the growing tips to feed on sap. However, since it takes months for the frond to grow out and emerge, the beetles are long gone by the time this kind of damage is visible.
